The fear of stammering
I am somebody who had to cope and live with a stammering problem for eighteen years. I really really hated having this form of speech impediment and I always had a determination that one day I would be able to overcome it.
The thought of having to live my whole life with a stammer was a thought that I would not even contemplate thinking about it!
Yes there were quite a few people who attempted to drag me down and it was not easy to keep up this positive attitude at times. As an example, certain members of my class at school used to tease and taunt me because of the stammer.
They found it quite funny and seemingly enjoyed ruining my day. I tried to not become annoyed or bothered by these children but I have to admit that I failed in this quest. There were many a day when I would return home after school in tears.
Another group of people, who without meaning to, would test this positive attitude, were speech therapists. I was told on more than one occasion, by different speech therapists, that you can not overcome a stammer.
These are so called specialists and it is therefore hard to dismiss their opinions. My family however have bought me up to only think in a positive way and I now truly believe in this, as it works.
Certain people from my circle of friends could also have been more supportive at times. The majority of my friends were absolutely superb and would help me in a number of ways, for example by ordering drinks for me.
One or two of them however did laugh at me from time to time, this is just part of life of course and I do not hold a grudge.
At the age of twenty-two my stammering nightmare finally came to an end and I now help other people to achieve fluency. I have a website at http://www.stammering-stuttering.co.uk which includes information about the types of stammering therapy I offer.
Steve has produced a 70 minute DVD on which he describes the techniques and approaches taught on his popular 1 to 1 Speech Courses.
He explains in great detail how to implement them and make them a natural part of that person’s speech.
