Speech therapy for stammering

The birth of the internet has opened up many new options for people who are looking into ways of curing their stammer. I remember growing up being frustrated at not really knowing where to look in my quest to find effective treatments for my own speech impediment.

My own stammer started when I was just four years of age and even now I can recall how horrible it felt when my parents made me attend speech therapy. I had many questions in my head but felt that I was too young to express them:

Why do I need to go and see this speech therapist? Yes I have a stammer but all he is basically telling me to do is to speak slowly or to take a deep breath before I talk. I do not see my friends having to do this when they are talking, so why should I?

This speech therapist has not had a speech impediment, can he therefore really understand what it is like to have a stammer?

The speech therapist has told my parents that he believes there is no cure for stammering, so what in reality is the point?

Despite these emotions I did still attend speech therapy, in fact I was still attending when I was aged eighteen years and guess what, I still had the stammer, in fact it had become even more severe.

I  then went to the library to look for some sort of stuttering therapy, not much luck there either.

Nowadays stuttering therapies from around the world can be accessed online. There are one-to-one speech courses, ebooks or self help dvd's.

I am happy to report that at the age of twenty-two I was successful at overcoming my own stammer and that ever since my life has never been so good.
