Take the OCD Test – Do You Have OCD?

beat commitment phobia guideThis OCD test based on the Yale Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale is often used to assess if a person has the disorder. However, no OCD test should ever replace a comprehensive examination and diagnosis by a qualified mental health professional or therapist.

But for the purpose of getting a better idea of what signs constitute obsessive compulsive disorder, you can try taking the following OCD test.

Remember, that answering these OCD test questions with a "yes" doesn't necessarily mean that you have OCD. If you answer "yes" to any of them, however, we advice that you show your answers to a cognitive behavioral therapist or doctor.

OCD Test – Thoughts/Images

  1. Do you find yourself often thinking about things repeatedly, which make you anxious or upset, and which you can't stop thinking about no matter how hard you try?
  2. Do you dwell on unwanted thoughts repeatedly just to prove that you won't act in a way that may be violent, harmful, immoral, or sexually inappropriate?
  3. Are you excessively concerned about acting/talking in a way that may be violent, harmful, immoral, or sexually inappropriate?

OCD Test – Uncertainty/Insufficiency

  1. Do you visually check things repeatedly to verify that a just-completed action was performed correctly or sufficiently (e.g., checking/rechecking the mailbox to ensure that the letter you just placed there is really there)?
  2. Are you a slave to routine actions (e.g., locking the door, turning off the stove or light, etc.) simply because you aren't certain that you've done things just right?
  3. Do you often ask people to reassure you that an action was completed properly (e.g., I locked the door, didn't I?)?

OCD Test – Cleaning

  1. Do you clean items excessively (e.g., furniture, linen, car, etc.)?
  2. Are you prone to repeated hand washing or showering (or spending much more time on these things) than most persons?

OCD Test – Harm/Injury

  1. Are you constantly repeating some daily activity just to make sure that you didn't harm anyone (e.g., repeatedly turning the car back to make sure you didn't run someone over)?
  2. Are you always asking other people if you've done something harmful/wrong/bad?

OCD Test – Order/Symmetry

  1. Do you keep needlessly arranging things (desk, bookshelves, cabinets, etc.) because you need to make them even or symmetrical?
  2. Are you finding it hard to stop yourself from constantly straightening things (drapes, rugs, books, etc.) in an effort to achieve symmetry?

OCD Test – Counting

  1. Do keep counting mundane things (tiles, light poles, etc.), which don't really require counting?

OCD Test – Hoarding

  1. Are you always finding it hard to throw things away, even if these items (paper bags, bills, containers, etc.) have limited value or are considered garbage?
