Some fears are conditional (fear of dogs or heights) which may happen if you have been affected adversely by that cause. Anxious personalities are more likely to develop fears. Belligerent fears (such as the fear of public speaking) are social fears. When speaking in public, you make yourself vulnerable to audience's opinion and worry about their opinion being negative.
The best way to overcome such fears is by practise, practise, practise.
• Imagine yourself doing the task such as speaking in public, sleeping alone or handling a computer in a positive situation with no negative outcome.
• Watch speakers and emulate their tones, speaking styles and posture.
• Start with smaller audiences. Tell a joke to a group of friends or family and practise the punch-line. Ask them for feedback. Take criticism objectively.
• Video tape yourself. Show it to a good speaker for feedback.
• Technophobia comes from the fear of learning a new skill. It is easier for children to learn because they are not yet conditioned to fear failure. In the case of technology, the fear may be amplified because you are scared of spoiling expensive machinery. Again, here, you just have to take small steps and practise.
• If the fears are intense, one may have to resort to professional help.
