Weird Phobias
Phobias are more common than most people realize, and therea re hundresds of strange, unique, and
funny phobias,
along with a sring of more serious phobias that can be detrimental to
somebody’s well being.
Most phobias are
rooted in deep childhood anxiety and situations where a person experienced something overwhelmingly
uncomfortable.
During this time, the
person may have experienced an elevated level of stress and was unable to cope effectively with it. As a result,
they will have a fear of the object, place, situation, or experience, and will tend to avoid it as much as
possible.
Some weird, yet common, phobias include the fear of clouds, the
fear of vegetables, the fear of numbers, and the fear of words.
Although these are rare, there are plenty of people who experience the symptoms of a phobia from these
triggering situations and are simply reacting to the catalyst.
Cacophobia is the fear of ugliness. These people will
withdraw, react strangely, or limit their responses to ugly characters, people, inconsistent or asymmetric
objects, and other strange items they may encounter.
People with Dendrophobia have a fear of
trees. These people will avoid forests, hiking trails,
parks, and other places where trees are in abundance. They will
have a difficult time enjoying outdoor activities, and may even have some strange stories as to why they fear
each type fo tree.
Fear of water and beds filled with fluid or water beds Wasserbetten is another example of just how unusual fears and phobias can
be.
Telephonophobia is the fear of telephones. Even though almost everyone has and uses a cell phone
today, there are many people that do not enjoy speaking on the telephone, and will avoid it as much as
possible.
Aritmophobia is the fear of numbers. These people will
have difficulty and face many challenges in learning financial issues, reading signs, learning about prices,
and general day to day activities. They are unlikely to pursue a
career as accountant.
Heliophobia is the fear of the sun. These people will
withdraw from the sun as much as possible, and do not generally enjoy sunbathing, going to the beach, sitting
outside, or any other activities where they are exposed to sunlight. This is not naturally healthy for daily functioning, and they may need
extra help to overcome this.
During therapy, a person can slowly learn to become comfortable with the situation or object through exposure
treatment or reconditioning. Still, many people just learn to live
with their phobia without too much concern.
As long as it is not interfering with day to day life, they can continue to function normally and just acknowledge
their strange reactions!
