Ways to beat phobias and anxiety
All of us have anxieties and phobias. Even animals do. One may think that it is normal to have these.
But if it is excessive, it must be treated as soon as
possible before it becomes worse.
The usual things people are scared of are darkness, sunlight, water, air, heights, flying, fire, unreasonable
superiors or bosses!
For example, we maybe afraid of bugs. This condition causes an emotional reaction, a form of anxiety panic.
This is usually caused by unpleasant experience with bugs during childhood. It might be that the person was
bitten painfully which caused high fever.
Some acquired it through their elders who would scream every time they see bugs
especially cockroaches. Eventually this will become some sort of a psychological disorder. Actually bug phobia
is not a serious problem. It is a conditioned phobia thus it can be overcome.
Anxiety, on the other hand, is characterized by such symptoms like sweaty palms, fast heartbeat, excessive
worrying and throbbing head. Persons suffering like this have varying reasons.
One is lingering childhood trauma which has not been resolved till
adulthood.
Others may have experienced personal crisis in the past. For a certain period of time, it is normal. However, if
it is prolonged, the person must seek help immediately.
There are many online programs which are available, however, to assist anyone who requires medical help for
anxiety attacks. Program which is based on experience is offered.
It is also humane because empathy is an important part of this program. The primary goal of which is to
strengthen a person’s emotional core or foundation. Programs, like this, ensure that the person will not be
emotionally weakened by disagreeable experience.
It also allows the person to start all over with a clean slate with a more strong emotional foundation so that
the person will be able to view problems and concerns as a normal occurrence in life.
Furthermore, it keeps the person focused on experience that makes him happy and therefore, giving him a more
accurate view on himself thereby enhancing his self-image and esteem.
It is less time-consuming and only offers solution through self-help guidelines. It makes the sufferer more as a
blessing to his family rather than a burden. Anxiety attacks are normal occurrences but if you think, you are
suffering more than the usual check on this program.
Anxiety is naturally experienced under certain circumstances like being laid off
from work or getting divorce papers. When this becomes consistent, other factors should be considered.
Anxiety disorders are usually felt by people who are suffering sickness on a larger scale. Coping with it is a
real challenge. At this time of recession, people are likely to suffer anxieties.
It is a chronic fear that limits a person’s ability to carry on with his daily activities. It is even worse, if
it is accompanied by panic attacks. There is a common myth that anxiety can be dealt with by changing one’s mind
set.
The fact is that human mind cannot distinguish what is real and imaginary. When one has uncontrollable anxiety
attacks, he loses rational judgment, leading to complicated problems.
Anxiety when not treated or managed well by therapy can lead to serious ailments such as stroke, hypertension,
asthma, and heart attack. Hyperacidity during stressful times is also attributed to anxiety.
It causes adrenalin in its toxic level to shoot up in the stomach. Medication should be the last resort to
treating this problem.
Proper diet, less stress, enough rest and exercise should first be done. Changing one’s mental environment can
also help the sufferer. Practice deep breaths and condition your mind that you are already okay.
Do 10 jumping jacks and read joke books. After all, laughter is the best medicine. Get a hobby. It diverts your
mind from the root causes of your anxiety.
It can be that the other root cause of anxiety is a negative experience in the past. The anxiety sufferer must be made aware of that so that he can easily manage his anxiety problem
by consciously correcting his present reality.
Aromatherapy maybe employed to relieve anxiety especially one that is caused by stress. To de-stress oneself
yoga, meditation, tai chi and some breathing exercises maybe employed.
One should not worry when experiencing anxiety occasionally. Just bear in mind that there is anxiety which is
considered normal and there is another which crosses the line.
Anxiety disorders are real, serious and treatable. It is believed that it is caused by a combination of
biological and environmental factors just like heart disease and diabetes.
Most of these sufferers can be treated professionally.
The success of such treatment varies among the sufferers. One may respond after only a month while for others it
may take more than a year.
It is sometimes made more difficult to treat if a sufferer has more than one anxiety disorder or suffering from
depression or is a drug addict, a reason why treatment must be individualized.
Although individualized, there several standard approaches proven to be
effective.
1. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy
CBT for short is a short term form of psychotherapy. Here the patient is actually involved in his or her own
recovery. CBT focuses on identifying, understanding and modifying thinking and behavior patterns.
2. Cognitive Therapy
The objective here is to change unwanted and disturbing patterns.
3. Behavior Therapy
The goal here is to modify and gain control of unwanted behavior.
4. Relaxation
Techniques to help people develop the ability to cope more effectively with stress and physical symptoms
contributing to anxiety.
5. Medication
It is usually useful in the treatment of anxiety disorder and often used in conjunction with one or more
therapies above.
Self-help for anxiety and anxiety disorders is available to anyone who worries a
lot.
One maybe anxious because of demanding schedules, lack of exercise or sleep, pressure at home or work or even
too much consumption of coffee.
This goes to show that one’s lifestyle is unhealthy and stressful. So if one worries too much, take time and
evaluate yourself.
Ask yourself these questions:
1. Do you make time each day for relaxation and fun?
2. Are you getting emotional support you need?
3. Are you taking care of your body?
4. Are overloaded with responsibilities?
5. Do you ask for help when you need it?
If your stress level is high, think about how you can bring your life into balance. There may be
responsibilities you can give up and delegate to others. If you are feeling unsupported, find someone who can be
trusted and confide in him or her your problems.
Just talking about your problems can make these less frightening. You can reduce your anxiety levels by
challenging the irrational beliefs, pessimistic attitudes and rigid mental habits that trigger and sustain
worry.
While self help strategies can be effective, if one’s worries and problems are already great that can cause
extreme distress or disrupting your daily regimen, it is time to seek professional help.
Start by getting a medical check up so your doctor can make sure that anxiety is not caused by a medical
condition. The physician would also like to know about any prescription drugs you’re taking or even herbal
medication.
If he rules out medical cause, the next step is to consult a therapist. The therapist will soon work with you
the cause and type of anxiety disorder and devise a course of treatment.
Here are some suggestions in finding qualified professional care:
