Depression and anxiety
Depression and anxiety often go hand in hand. While depression is characterized
by a lack of energy, lack of focus,
hopelessness, and other feelings that are born out of
what is a basic “lack of energy,” behaviorally, anxiety is actually caused by overstimulation and an excess of
energy, even though its effects are just as negative.
For example, someone with severe depression may simply not have the energy to do
anything; they may feel so physically affected that they cannot even raise their heads off of their pillows, much
less do even mundane things such as shower or do the dishes, or do more challenging tasks such as go to work.
On the other hand, anxiety is, in some respects, the opposite swing of the pendulum. It can
be caused by hypervigilance so pervasive that it can paralyze sufferers.
Although, in some respects, this can look the same behaviorally, in that someone with pervasive anxiety may not be able to move, similar to his depressed cohort, in fact, the
physical effect is the opposite.
Someone with pervasive anxiety may, in fact, have such excessive fear that he has a racing heart, sweaty palms,
dry mouth, and literally feel as though he or she is going to die, from terror. However, instead of being weighed
down and “depressed” by his mood, he is frozen in place.
Both depression and anxiety can be caused by each other in an indirect fashion. For example, someone who is
depressed may not be able to perform adequately at his job, and so, he develops anxiety and fear that he may lose
his job as a result of this.
Someone who is overly anxious and has social phobia, for example, may
feel that he or she is continually being ridiculed (whether or not this is really true), and this belief that he is
being ridiculed can lead to feelings of hopelessness and depression.
If anxiety and depression occur together, both can be alleviated by medication and behavioral therapy. In
addition, they may also be helped by nutrition and lifestyle changes, such as complex carbohydrates, adequate
intake of vitamins and minerals, protein, and “good” fat that will not only help “feed” the body, but the brain;
omega-3 fatty acids, for example, positively affect the brain’s function.
Medication can greatly help sufferers of anxiety and depression as a temporary stopgap; antianxiety medications
such as benzodiazepines can help patients feel better almost immediately, so that they have the focus and energy to
begin to focus on the behavioral changes they’ll need to make.
Some patients will need medication for a prolonged period of time, and for this, benzodiazepines are not
generally indicated. In this case, antidepressant medications can take the edge off anxiety over the long-term.
Medications used for this purpose include SSRIs such as Paxil.
