Treating Anxiety Disorder

anxiety disorderAn anxiety disorder can strike at any time, but in fact, in the United States today, anxiety disorders are very prevalent. It’s estimated that approximately 40 million Americans between the ages of 18 and 54 are diagnosed with anxiety disorders at any given time.

An anxiety disorder can include any anxiety symptom or group of symptoms that is pervasive, persistent, that you cannot seem to shake, and that either is completely irrelevant to the situation at hand, or far overblown in proportion to the situation at hand.

In other words, even though anxiety itself, in certain situations, is completely normal, anxiety disorder is not. For an anxiety disorder, you may need help of some sort to get rid of it.

First of all, your health practitioner may take a significant history from you, and try to pinpoint the source of the beginnings of your anxiety disorder. This is also something you can try to explore yourself, although it is still advised that you visit your health practitioner to make sure that there are no underlying causes of your anxiety, such as a health problem.

Have you just started a new job, for example, and had you had to move away from familiar surroundings? Does that new job entail skills that you are just learning, so that you are under extra pressure at work?

In these cases, what would seem to be pervasive anxiety disorder may simply be a temporary adjustment to a new situation, but even so, professional help and even temporary medication can help.

However, for other Americans, pervasive anxiety disorders are much more long-lasting and may need significant medical intervention, such as a prescription of some sort of antianxiety medication, and/or other therapy, such as work with a therapist to develop relaxation techniques and learning skills to help thwart an anxiety attack when it starts.

Ultimately, it is perhaps the best advice to say that significant lifestyle changes will be the only long-term, lasting way to “cure” anxiety disorder. It has been surmised by some that we humans as a species are simply overloaded by our modern lives.

Instead of living by the rhythms of nature, rising when the sun does and sleeping when it’s dark, we live 24-hour lives, with no opportunity for downtime. And indeed, in large part because of this overload, instead of simply experiencing anxiety when true danger is a threat or exists, we are always experiencing a constant low level of it.

Sometimes, these low levels of anxiety can break through into full-blown panic attacks. Therefore, it may be advisable for people experiencing pervasive anxiety to make changes in their lifestyles. First of all, get proper nutrition, with plenty of B vitamins, for example. B vitamins are energy building blocks, and a lack of them in the diet can contribute to anxiety.

Second, get adequate sleep. Fatigue, which many people try to overcome by the use of caffeine, can also contribute to anxiety because you simply can’t function properly when you’re tired (and also perhaps are wired on caffeine). And if you’ve got to get too much done in a 24-hour period and simply can’t get it all done, this, of course, will also contribute to anxiety as well as, perhaps, feelings of failure.

So the best solution may simply be to cut back on your workload, gradually, as you’re able, and bring your life back into balance.

Ideally, many people say that the best balance would be to divide the 24-hour day into three periods of eight hours: eight hours for sleep, eight hours for paid work, as applicable, and eight hours for other things you need to get done, including leisure, which is also important.

If any of these three areas begins to creep into the others, you know you have to bring your life back into balance.

For our German visitors:

In welchen Situationen?
